Project Types: Lecture, Meeting, and Custom

Why Project Types Matter

When you create a new project in 12scribe, you choose a project type: Lecture, Meeting, or Other. This choice is not just a label — it directly affects how AI analyzes your recording and what kind of structured notes it generates.

Each project type tells the AI what patterns to look for in your transcript. A lecture has definitions, arguments, and conclusions. A meeting has action items, decisions, and open questions. An interview has questions and answers. Choosing the right type means the AI produces more relevant, more useful Smart Notes.

You select the project type when creating the project, but you can change it later from the project settings screen. This flexibility means you do not need to worry about making the wrong choice upfront.

Lecture Type

The Lecture project type is designed for educational content — university lectures, workshops, seminars, webinars, online courses, and training sessions. When AI processes a lecture-type recording, it specifically looks for:

  • Logical parts and topic transitions within the lecture flow
  • Definitions and key concepts being introduced for the first time
  • Arguments, reasoning chains, and supporting evidence
  • Conclusions, summaries, and recap sections

The result is a structured breakdown that reads like a textbook outline. Each section includes text summaries, key quotes extracted from the transcript, and sometimes tables or logic chains that visualize relationships between concepts. This format is ideal for students who need to review material before exams or build study guides from lecture recordings.

Lecture analysis works best when the recording features a single speaker presenting structured content. Panel discussions or group seminars still work, but the AI treats them as less structured lectures rather than multi-party meetings.

Meeting Type

The Meeting project type is optimized for business and team discussions. Instead of looking for academic structure, AI focuses on extracting actionable information that teams need after a meeting ends:

  • Tasks with assignees, deadlines, and priorities
  • Decisions made during the discussion with supporting context
  • Open questions that need follow-up in future meetings
  • Key discussion points and the reasoning behind each decision

After analysis, you get a structured meeting summary that you can share with your team. Each task and decision links back to the exact moment in the recording where it was discussed, so anyone who missed the meeting can hear the original context with one tap.

The Meeting type also works well for client calls, stakeholder reviews, and project retrospectives — any discussion where tracking outcomes and next steps is important.

Tip: Use the Meeting type even for informal team discussions if you want to track action items and decisions afterward. The AI is good at finding commitments even in casual conversations.

Other Type and How to Choose

The Other project type works as a general-purpose option for recordings that do not fit neatly into Lecture or Meeting categories. Use it for interviews, podcast episodes, personal voice memos, research field recordings, brainstorming sessions, or mixed-format content. AI will still generate Smart Notes, but with a more general analytical approach that identifies topics, key statements, and structural shifts without assuming a specific format.

Here is a quick decision guide for choosing the right project type:

  • Choose Lecture when one person is teaching or presenting structured educational content
  • Choose Meeting when multiple people are discussing tasks, plans, decisions, or action items
  • Choose Other for interviews, brainstorming, voice memos, podcasts, or any recording that mixes formats

You can change the project type after creation from the project settings screen at any time. Changing the type does not affect existing recordings, markers, or transcriptions — it only changes how future AI analysis is performed when you generate new Smart Notes.

Warning: If you change the project type after AI analysis has already run, you will need to regenerate Smart Notes to get results optimized for the new type. The old Smart Notes remain until you delete them or regenerate.
